Abstract: The first protection elements used in electrical circuits since the 19th century for lighting installations were the fuses. The improvement of their construction and operation has led to the design and implementation of automatic fuses that allow differentiated protection to overcurrents. Providing of dependent and independent protection characteristics has been implemented in MCB type devices. With the introduction of differential protection, RCD-type devices have appeared. Their functionality has been included over time in MCB devices. Avoiding the occurrence of fires starting from the detection by the protective devices of the electric arc from its earliest phase was possible with the introduction of AFDD devices. These devices integrate all the functions of the other equipment mentioned above. The present study shows the evolution of the protection characteristics provided by the single-phase devices having currents up to 40 A related to their internal structure, as well as the schemes required for their testing.
